EXECUTIVE CHAT Eimskip‘s Domestic services in Iceland works on many levels, reaching all of the company‘s production systems. There are in total 15 offices in Iceland with 500 employees, all sharing the common goal of providing excellent transport service with the buyer’s needs being the focal point. The last few months have been difficult, with heavy burdens on both employees and Eimskip‘s management. Since Iceland‘s economy crumbled in October, we have had to adjust our operations quickly to the great changes we have seen, and find ways to maintain good service in difficult surroundings. Import to Iceland has pummelled, with increased export partly softening the blow. With this shift in business, the operations in Reykjavik‘s Sundahofn-harbour, the Warehouse Hotel and all of the domestic distribution have decreased considerably. Eimskip´s domestic transport – Flytjandi – is the largest and most efficient transport company in Iceland, with 80 fixed stops around the island. Servicing this system are around 255 trailer units and 140 trucks, most of which are equipped with temperature controlled storage. The total bills of lading are over 2.000 each day. Despite less business transport-wise, Flytjandi has managed to improve its utilization considerably from the year before. Flytjandi runs its own distribution centre and customer service in Reykjavik as well as 11 offices around the country. In addition to this, fine co-operation is maintained with several smaller agents that service smaller and more remote parts of Iceland. Recent years has seen great emphasis on bettering the profit of these services and systematic work towards lowering costs and increasing efficiency. Eimskip’s Warehouse Hotel in Reykjavik has placed a great emphasis on storage solutions, but the Sundafrost and Sundakaelir cold stores have been well utilised for a long period. Due to the economic situation, the rollover of cargo has increased with vendors opting to keep lower supplies. Eimskip is constantly finding new customers for its Warehouse Hotel to utilise the dry cargo area adequately, with good results. In the last few years we have seen a great and steady growth of Eimskip’s Distribution Services in the Reykjavik Capital area. The turnover has grown 25-30% each year, and more than doubled from 2005. The goal is always to run a steady operation in this field in the coming years. The Distribution Service handles more than shipments each day to customers all over the Reykjavik area, with around 30-40 vehicles of all sizes that run from early in the morning until late at night. Reykjavik‘s Sundahofn-terminal has also seen its share of the recession in import. Eimskip has systematically worked on regaining the normal efficiency and service level apparent before 2007-2008, when the overflow and quantity of containers were far beyond what can be considered as normal, leading to difficulties regarding general services, damage etc. In Eastern-Iceland we have seen a great change in all our operations in stevedoring for the Alcoa aluminium smelter. Eimskip’s container yard in Reydarfjordur oversees all services to Alcoa, including stevedoring and stuffing of export containers, in addition to the daily jobs connected to Eimskip and Samskip in the area. Mjoeyrarhofn-harbour in Reydarfjordur has become one of the largest ports in Iceland, with around 1.500 tons of cargo annually going through, with Eimskip’s employees on duty 24 hours a day, all year round. I have fast-paced through the 1400 kilometre journey around Iceland, and highlighted the most important aspects of Eimskip on the island. Here we run a diverse business with few aspects of the transport business unaffected. What matters the most is the quality of our employees that have guarded our company and its services through these recent turbulent times. I would like to use this chance and thank our employees for standing behind Eimskip in these dire surroundings, with hope that there are brighter times ahead for our company and Iceland as a whole.
